What Is Region One Sciences?

As noted above, R/1 Sciences is a Starfleet Region One department run by RDC RAdm. Richard Heim. We are a bunch of people who are interested in science and who wish to share our enthusiasm about science through mutual scientific education. Some of us are real scientists who are interested in Star Trek and science-fiction, while others are Star Trek fans who find real science interesting and fun to learn. Perhaps the most exciting thing about Region One Sciences is seeing how the science fiction of Star Trek, and of science-fiction in general, has become science fact during the 20th Century.

Region One Sciences Newsletter

Region One Sciences news is published in an online newsletter. A quarterly newsletter which contained articles, news, opinion, and occasionally fiction dealing with science in the real world and science in science-fiction/Star Trek was published through late 2000. The newsletter also included reports from the Science Officers of Starfleet's Region One starships and space stations, from the Science RDC's of other Starfleet regions, and from the Starfleet FDC Science.

Beginning in 2001, Region One Sciences news and reports have been published as part of the Carolina Communicator, the bi-monthly newsletter of the U.S.S. Alaric.

Anyone can contribute to the newsletter. Send your submissions to Richard Heim at AlaricRH then the at symbol sprynet.com or land mail them to the address below.

Chief Science Officers' Handbook

New Chief Science Officers frequently wonder what their responsibilities are aboard their starship in their new role. The answer is: the CSO position is whatever you want it to be. After all, Starfleet is a club about a fictional organization and it's supposed to be fun! But here are some guidelines which we hope you find useful.

You are functioning as part of a Starfleet chapter, so the rules and procedures of Starfleet and your chapter for ranks and promotions apply. As a department chief (Chief of Sciences aboard your ship), you generally need to provide a periodic report to your Commanding Officer. You also need to provide a monthly report to Richard Heim, the RDC of Sciences.

What do you do aboard your ship as CSO? The guiding principle should be to educate and to have fun. You can:

  • have science-based skits with the characters being historical scientists or Star Trek/Science-Fiction characters.
  • write articles on science for your chapter's publications.
  • have guest speakers attend chapter meetings and talk about science.
  • or even be a guest speaker yourself at local organizations and talk about science. These could include slide shows, videos, etc. at local schools, churches, library groups, etc. This could be an excellent publicity venue for your club.
  • plan field trips to local scientific organizations. Some areas have facilities that allow public tours, such as Washington, D.C. which is home to the National Air and Space Museum and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, and Asheville, NC which is home to the National Climatic Data Center. There are science educational facilities, like Charlotte, NC's Discovery Place and Boston, MA's Museum of Science, to name just two. Also local planetariums and other special libraries and museums.
  • plan field trips to area science "hot spots", like caverns, archeaological sites, etc. Western North Carolina has Judaculla Rock, southern New Hampshire has America's Stonehenge, Wyoming has Yellowstone National Park and Devil's Tower, Arizona has the Grand Canyon and Meteor Crater and the Petrified Forest, South Dakota has the Badlands. Our country is overflowing with neat places to see!
  • plan stargazing field trips.
  • these field trips can be by just members of your ship, or you can plan joint science away teams with members from other ships in your area.
One of the most exciting and fun science activities within Starfleet is Starfleet Academy's Vulcan Academy of Science (VAS). We recommend that you take as many VAS courses as you can. The VAS web page is: http://www.sfi-sfa.com/sfi-sfa/primary/schoolinfo/vas.asp and VAS can be contacted via email at VAS@sfi.org.

Ship CSO Responsibilities

Region One Chief Science Officer's need to send a monthly report to RDC Richard Heim. They can be emailed to AlaricRH then the at symbol sprynet.com or land mailed to: Region One Sciences, P.O. Box 2072, Asheville, NC 28802. CSO reports are due by the first week of the month (generally by the 7th of the month).

The monthly report is a writeup telling us (R/1 Sciences) what your ship's science departments have been up to. It can be a couple sentences, or a long missive, or anything in between. It should include:

  1. Your name and address (including land and email).
  2. Chapter name.
  3. Date of report.
  4. Total number of members in department (including yourself).
  5. If you have any members who have been promoted, completed Starfleet Academy courses, or any members who have received any special awards (within Starfleet or outside), please list their names and accomplishment.
  6. If you have any departmental project planned or in the works, please include that as well.
  7. If you have any concerns or just want to tell us what your ship has been doing, by all means include that too!

R/1 Science Listservers

Region One Sciences has an internet listserver which is used for communications between and amongst R/1 CSO's, RDC, & ARDC (and other regions' Science RDC's and the FDC). This is the R1RDCScience@onelist.com list. All R/1 CSO's (or their ship's science representative) are encouraged to subscribe to this list, as it will be used for official announcements and official communications which are intended just for CSO and RDC/FDC eyes (so that we don't bore the rest of Fleet with administrivia).

There is another listserver which is used by Region One Sciences (actually, by anyone interested in science, whether you're a Starfleet member or not) for fun educational sciences posts. This is the Science-Lab@egroups.com list.
